Moving our mom to Franklin Park was a difficult decision for us all. We weighed the pros and cons and decided it was in her best interest to be in Boerne. We want you to know that we have been so much more than satisfied with the care she has received from your staff. They have gone out of their way to get to know both Mom and her family. They have learned what she likes to eat, her sleep patterns, the things that make her smile, and the things that can take away her smile. It was the right decision for both Mom and our family.
But, your staff made us so much more than satisfied this week. They did more than a good job. They went above and beyond to care for her. Mom had a visit from her brother and his wife this week. They haven’t seen each other in several years. Both have aged, but Mom’s health and ability to engage have been greatly impaired since he has seen her. We were concerned for her in this. Our goal was to preserve her dignity and help create an environment where she could be at her best when he arrived. In an attempt to have her looking her best, I inquired about her being able to visit the salon the day before he was scheduled to come. Just in passing, Cindi asked more about the situation, and I explained to her why it was important to us. She made a note of his upcoming visit in Mom’s records and asked me his name. She began talking to Mom about him and telling her that he was coming to visit and did this for a week prior to him coming. She saw to it that she was left to sleep a little later so Mom would be cheerful and fresh. Mary and Yvonne showered her and had on a beautiful outfit. But, their care went so far beyond this. Her hair was washed and curled. She had on a bit of makeup. They even found a necklace and earrings for her to wear.
Simply put, when her family arrived, she was beautiful. And when she saw her brother, she called out to him and was elated. We know those acts of kindness preparing her for his visit contributed to her recognizing him. We were all in tears over it. It was a beautiful moment.
If she were able, she would say thank you for this loving care. So, on her behalf and on behalf of the four of us, we want you to know that this was so much more than just caring for her needs. In Matthew 25, Jesus was teaching his disciples with parables. At the very last of this chapter, He spoke about caring for others. Verse 40 says, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me.” Alzheimer’s robs people of their independence and often their dignity. They slowly become dependent on others for every need. Your staff saw our Mom as we still see her—the vibrant, loving woman who would want to present her best self on this special day. With every effort in their extra special care of her, they ministered to her and to us. We were moved to tears by their selfless care for her. Those little things matter. They matter to us. They would have mattered to Mom. Your staff took care of those things and loved her well that day, and we see and feel that this is the way they continually care for her. We can’t leave Yesi unmentioned as she is so very often attending to Mom so lovingly and carefully, and we know there were others who helped in other ways and always do. We can never begin to express our thankfulness for their attention to her. They performed more than their job when we know the bare minimum can be a monumental task to accomplish. They loved her well. And we love them for it.
With the warmest of hearts,
A. Warrick, T. Smith, B. Barber, & B. Barber, Family of a Franklin Park® Boerne Resident
